A Brief History

I decided tonight to start blogging my games and adventures. I should have done this years ago!

I have been refereeing soccer on and off for the past 25+ years. My high school coach, Mo said that I had been refereeing since I started playing. After getting too many yellow cards in one season, my high school soccer coach "reccomended" that I take the entry level course in order to keep playing. I was the youngest in the class at 14 at our local community college in West Palm Beach, Florida. Chuck was the instructor and was one of the referees that I used to communicate with while playing. O.K. it was dissent, but, he had thick skin. Ernie on the other hand had the ears of a rabbit, definitely not the legs of one, oops Yellow Card!

After a few games in Palm Springs, FL all by my lonesome, I decided that I would rather focus on playing and not put up with the hassles from the parents and them pesky little 8 years olds. I am extremely sensitive to ANY abuse that is given to young referees now and I am a bull dog when anyone goes after one of my referee kin. I tend to take too much crap, but still have fun.

I took a few years off, broke a leg, broke an arm (different games about 4 years a part) and then found out that being a grad student didn't pay much. I was now in East Lansing, Michigan and saw an add from GLASRA. I decided to take the class and I was very glad that I did. Keri Seitz, the very good, and very attractive United States FIFA referee was in that class! Dr. Howard was the instructor and I laugh now as I remember telling him I was a "FIFA" referee. That is what Chuck said back in 79, or the book we used said. I know a lot different now.

Dean Kimmith is a major part of my referee growth and succes. He assigned me my first U-19 match. Aye Karumba, Mason vs Haslett. They ate me up, broken collar bone on one player. NOT ENOUGH CARDS of the red phase, I grew a lot in that one game and learned a lot as well.

I took the Assessor course in Michigan as well in the early 90's. I should have waited, but I learned a lot. Poor Nick was my first big assessment and I wrote him up by the book. I think that was my last assessment as well, because I needed to focus on refing.

More to come

  • Frederick Internationals 1 : Los Ticos 1
  • Green Hill Manor
  • 9/18/2005 Sun 11:30 AM
  • MDSL
  • Mason Dixon
  • Senior Men
  • Assistant Referee

Notes

  1. First line in over a year.
  2. Ground was very hard and unforgiving.
  3. Match was much more lopsided than the score showed.
  4. There was a lot of talk by the players before the game started about the referee. Not love songs.
